Read More About... Runaway Investigations
Runaway Investigations are initially conducted as missing persons investigations. Once the Case Manager has confirmed the individual has, in fact, runaway the investigation then changes course. Runaway investigations are not similar to Locates or Skiptraces. Just because an investigative agency says they conduct locates or skiptrace investigations, does not mean they are equipped and capable of handling runaway investigations.
The first 48 hours are critical in a runaway investigation. A thorough search of the residence, specifically the individuals bedroom and bathroom. A detailed interview is conducted with the parents to obtain stats of the runaway, as well as, potential leads. The parents will be instructed to begin gathering information, such as, names , addresses, and telephone numbers of family members, teachers, family friends, co-workers, schoolmates, and others. The investigator will contact the local law enforcement agency and act as the liaison, gathering the appropriate information from the officer and requesting the runaway be entered into NCIC.
Interviews will then be conducted with persons whom were close to the individual. Since most runaways are children, the persons who are interviewed are usually children. When these interviews are conducted with children, permission is usually obtained from their parents for the interview. These interviews are vital to obtaining leads and information on where the runaway is located.
Surveillance may then be conducted on the location the child is thought to be hiding out. It is imperative to confirm the runaways location with out tipping off the runaway. They may change locations and make it more difficult to identify the new location. Once the runaway is positively identified, the parents or law enforcement is called in to take custody of the child.
